About Us & Our History
Welcome to Rocky Mount Baptist Church! We are a Bible-based church dedicated to spreading the love of Jesus through worship, fellowship, and service. Our mission is to love the people of God and lift up the name of Jesus by nurturing faith, strengthening families, and serving our community with compassion and love. We may be a small church, but we are a mighty few. Whether you’re new to the faith or a lifelong believer, we invite you to join us in worship, prayer, and ministry as we seek to fulfill God’s calling together.
Rocky Mount Baptist Church of Rex, GA, was founded in 1852 by enslaved congregants. After emancipation, the church’s original building, a simple cinder-block structure, served as a schoolhouse for African American children. The current building, constructed by the congregation, was the place of worship for James and Della King, the paternal grandparents of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their remains are laid to rest on Rocky Mount’s historic grounds. Under the leadership of Pastor Jabare J. Smith, Rocky Mount Baptist Church still stands tall as a pillar of faith, love, and history.
